Hi I’m Holly
I'm an actress, writer and photographer residing in Southern California. I keep myself very busy driving back and forth between San Diego and Los Angeles on a weekly basis for various auditions and photoshoots. When I'm not shooting, acting or driving, I enjoy working in my garden and hanging out with my husband and kitty cat... Allow me to clarify... My husband, Jesse and my cat, Mary. My husband is not a cat.
Because I'm actively working as and actress and producing films of my own, I know all the challenges of getting yourself noticed in this industry. I know how difficult it is to be in front of the camera and to figure out what makes a good headshot.
I'm committed to helping my clients create fantastic, character specific headshots that will not only get them cast but that will inspire writers and directors to create roles for them. I believe in shooting for the stars. Don't settle on getting the part, aspire to inspiring the part!!
You shouldn't feel like a bundle of nerves during your shoot. It's my job to make it fun and to make you forget the stakes. We'll have a great time, play and, if all goes well, you'll have headshots that reflect the full range of your personality.
I can't wait to meet you all!
Our studio is located in The Bekin Building in central San Diego. Bordering Normal Heights, we're conveniently located between the 15 and the 805.

Who is Higher Ground Photo Studio?
Higher Ground is a boutique photography studio operating under the umbrella of it’s parent company:
Holly Rone heads up Higher Ground Photo Studio working side by side with husband, Jesse Johnson, who manages most other aspects of the Higher Ground brand.
Having been in front of the camera for years as an actress and print model, Holly decided to try her luck on the other side of the lens. She knows exactly what it's like to be the subject of a photo shoot and uses that experience to effectively guide and direct.
Holly is committed to capturing the true essence of her subject in the most unique and creative way possible.
It's our goal to ensure a comfortable, safe environment in which you can feel at ease.
In addition to being published twice, Holly is a three time top ten finalist and one time winner of the Shoot the Face International Editorial Portrait Competition. (www.shoottheframe.com). Holly was also selected to go to round 2 of Top Photographer with Nigel Barker, a competition sponsored by Adorama. She's also been given the Mark of Excellence from I-Shot-It.com.
"I don't know of any actor who actually likes getting headshots taken, but you will if Holly takes them! My recent headshots by Holly are the best ones I have ever had done. It was the perfect creative collaboration. From wardrobe, to background, to mood, she helped me create a unique portfolio of shots that reveal my essences as an actor. And moreover, it was fun. Being a performer herself, she understands the role and function of headshots, and the way they are used in today's online submissions. As a photographer, she has the artistry and skill to elicit and capture those dynamic, authentic moments. We treated the session as an acting exercise. The session was playful, and active. And for the first time, I believe my headshots capture that sense of aliveness. Thank you Holly."

"It's difficult beating my experience shooting with Holly at Higher Ground Photo Studio. She took the time to listen to my vision regarding the kind of looks I wanted. She even brought up several important aspects I hadn't considered. By the time we were set to shoot, I felt confident we both knew what shots I wanted to get out of the session. With a clear plan, the session went off like clockwork and we even had several moments of spontaneity that made for some of my best shots in the portfolio. Can't go wrong with Higher Ground and I definitely recommend this studio."
- Willis W. (Los Angeles)
"Holly is a fantastic headshot photographer and I only wish I'd found her before. Holly managed to capture my innards, which required putting me at ease. And she managed to do that within minutes of meeting me. By asking me questions and engaging me in improv scenarios, she captured several different facets of me. Next time I need headshots, I will definitely have another laughfest with Holly."
- Sue N. (La Mesa, CA)
"We had the pleasure of working with Holly for our engagement photos, and we could not be more pleased with the experience! Holly is truly a gifted photographer. She was very creative and made us feel so comfortable! The pictures turned out beautiful and really captured our love. We had a blast! We are looking forward to having Holly as our photographer for the wedding. Thank you for all that you do!"
- Elias B. and Lianna P. (Escondido, CA)
"Personal, patient, and real... While photographing my 12 day old son I was still recovering and getting use to mommy hood. Holly was so patient with us giving us the time and space to stop and nurse and do whatever it was to insure our baby boy was comfortable and taken care of during our session."
